Tech Desk: The Indian Air Force (IAF) is fast-tracking a critical modernization drive, aiming to finalize the ambitious IAF 114 MRFA deal for new fighter jets within the current fiscal year. This aggressive timeline is crucial for arresting the decline in the IAF’s combat squadron strength, which currently operates below its sanctioned level of 42. Securing this Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) procurement, potentially involving local manufacturing of Rafale jets under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, is paramount to maintaining air superiority.

Beyond fighter jets, the IAF’s two-year roadmap prioritizes significant upgrades to its transport and rotary-wing fleets. A major tender for up to 60 Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) is underway to replace aging assets and enhance air mobility. Simultaneously, the Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) induction continues, while the more advanced Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) progresses through its design phases, ensuring a robust and versatile air force.
