DRDO Unveils Portable ELINT System to Bolster India’s Drone and Radar Defense

portable ELINT system

Tech Desk: India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is set to revolutionize battlefield intelligence with a new generation of man-portable Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) systems. Developed by Hyderabad-based Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL), this compact technology is designed to detect, intercept, and analyze signals from enemy radars, drones, and other electronic transmitters, offering a critical edge in modern warfare.

This innovative portable ELINT system empowers frontline troops to monitor electronic activity in challenging terrains like mountains and remote regions, where larger surveillance platforms are impractical. By identifying crucial parameters such as operating frequencies and transmission patterns, the system can determine the type of enemy equipment in use, facilitating precise electronic warfare operations, including targeted jamming against hostile systems.

The technology works by simultaneously monitoring multiple frequency bands, then deinterleaving complex signals to isolate individual emitters. These isolated signals are compared against a vast library of known radar signatures, instantly classifying threats like search, tracking, or fire-control radars. This rapid identification is vital for enhancing situational awareness and providing early warnings against incoming aerial threats.

Crucially, the portable ELINT system significantly boosts counter-drone capabilities, helping locate operators and identify hostile drone activity. It can also estimate the source location of transmissions using advanced techniques like triangulation. With rigorous qualification testing covering extreme environmental conditions, DRDO’s portable ELINT system promises to be a robust, lightweight tool, transforming India’s defense against evolving electronic and unmanned threats.
