Indian Navy Accelerates Multi-Domain Ops with AI, Quantum Tech Integration

Indian Navy Multi-Domain Ops

Tech Desk: The Indian Navy is rapidly transforming into a formidable multi-domain force, aggressively integrating cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), quantum technology, and autonomous systems. Vice Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar confirmed this strategic shift, emphasizing the goal is to swiftly translate these innovations into tangible operational capabilities for fleet commanders at sea. This modernization drive marks a pivotal moment in India’s maritime defense, aiming for a highly networked presence across air, surface, and underwater domains.

Recent global conflicts have underscored the urgent need for advanced combat tools, especially counter-unmanned aircraft systems (counter-UAS) and AI-driven platforms, to neutralize rapidly evolving threats. Vice Admiral Kochhar specifically noted the Navy’s deep cognisance of quantum technology’s vast potential, anticipating its significant role in future secure communications, precision navigation, and high-tech sensing applications for defense. The service is actively exploring these emerging fields.

The Navy’s commitment extends beyond technological acquisition to robust operational readiness. ‘Operation Urja Suraksha,’ launched in March 2026 in response to geopolitical crises around the Strait of Hormuz, exemplifies this proactive stance. Heavily armed naval warships have provided vital navigational guidance and layered protection, successfully escorting commercial vessels carrying critical national requirements like crude oil, LNG, and LPG, securing cargo valued at approximately Rs 16,000 crore to Indian shores.

By combining domestic technological innovations with stringent operational readiness, the Indian Navy Multi-Domain Ops framework aims to strengthen its preparedness, protect vital sea lanes, and effectively secure the country’s strategic defense interests in an increasingly complex maritime environment. This forward-looking strategy positions the Navy as a technologically advanced and highly responsive force.
