HAL Unveils Next-Gen CATS Lineup at Aero India 2027: Bigger Warrior II, Astra-Equipped Phase I, and Revamped Hunter Missile

HAL CATS Aero India 2027

Tech Desk: India’s future of aerial warfare is taking a significant leap forward, with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) set to showcase an expanded Combat Air Teaming System (CATS) portfolio at Aero India 2027. This ambitious unveiling will feature the larger, stealthier CATS-Warrior Phase-II, an Astra missile-equipped CATS-Warrior Phase-I prototype, and a redesigned CATS-Hunter cruise missile, signaling India’s accelerated push towards networked, autonomous defence capabilities.

The highly anticipated CATS-Warrior Phase-II represents a major upgrade, designed for advanced deep-strike missions. Significantly larger, measuring 13-14.7 metres and weighing 5-9 tonnes, this variant boasts a sharply pointed, faceted forebody for enhanced stealth and a spacious internal weapons bay. It’s envisioned to carry formidable payloads like the BrahMos-NG missile, powered by two indigenous HTFE-25 turbofan engines.

Meanwhile, the original CATS-Warrior Phase-I, set for its maiden flight in 2027, will demonstrate its enhanced combat role. Displayed with Astra beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles on external hardpoints, it confirms HAL’s vision of loyal wingmen actively participating in air-to-air engagements alongside reconnaissance and strike missions.

Completing the formidable trio is the re-engineered CATS-Hunter. This compact, air-breathing stealth cruise missile, measuring 4.4 metres, integrates seamlessly into the CATS network. Designed to neutralize heavily defended enemy targets from stand-off distances, its small diameter allows flexible integration into various launch platforms.

HAL’s Aero India 2027 showcase will provide a tangible glimpse into the Indian Air Force’s multi-layered, autonomous future. By integrating manned aircraft with advanced uncrewed systems, India is strategically building a highly sophisticated air defence architecture.
