JLR Pauses Local Range Rover EV India Production, Opts for CBU Route Initially

Range Rover EV India production

Tech Desk: JLR has made a surprising strategic move for its upcoming electric Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models in India, opting for the Completely Built Unit (CBU) import route initially, a stark contrast to the existing local production of their combustion engine counterparts. This decision is particularly noteworthy given that the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are JLR’s second and third bestsellers in India, contributing significantly to the over 80 percent of the manufacturer’s sales in the financial year 2026.

According to Martin Limpert, Range Rover’s global managing director, JLR plans to “test the market first” before committing to local assembly of the electric versions. This cautious approach stems from a “flexible powertrain strategy,” allowing the company to thoroughly gauge demand and consumer response to its electrified offerings. On the surface, the decision seems counter-intuitive; both electric SUVs share the MLA-Flex (Modular Longitudinal Architecture) platform and could readily utilize existing manufacturing lines in India.

Moreover, the India-UK free-trade agreement currently offers no EV concessions for the initial five years, which might suggest that local assembly would be a more logical, cost-effective path. However, JLR appears content to prioritize market intelligence over immediate local production benefits, indicating a long-term strategic play rather than a short-term tactical one.

While the company remains tight-lipped about specific timelines for local assembly, Limpert confirmed that Indian consumers can expect to see these new electric Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models launch towards the second half of 2027. The ultimate decision on local Range Rover EV India production will undoubtedly hinge on how these premium electric SUVs perform in the Indian market during their initial CBU phase.
