India AI Governance: Paving the Way for Democratic Diffusion and Global Standards

India AI governance

The India AI Impact Summit 2026 has initiated a transformative shift in global AI governance, moving from resource concentration towards the “democratic diffusion” of AI capabilities. This pivotal shift is crucial for developing nations to evolve from “AI takers” to “AI makers,” a vision championed by Kavita Bhatia, COO of the IndiaAI Mission, and Anurag Deb, technology advisor with MeitY-IndiaAI. They emphasize that widening access to compute, data, and deployment pathways is paramount for this transition, thereby strengthening India AI governance principles globally.

The summit, culminating in the New Delhi Declaration on AI Impact, garnered endorsement from over 90 countries, underscoring a collective commitment to access, safety, skilling, and real-world deployment of AI technologies. Acknowledging global imbalances where high-income countries dominate AI infrastructure, India is proactively building public digital infrastructure under the IndiaAI Mission. Initiatives like the IndiaAI Compute Portal and AIKosh aim to democratize access for researchers and startups, while BHASHINI addresses multilingual AI models, vital for diverse non-English contexts, showcasing proactive India AI governance.

The summit also highlighted the importance of practical deployment, citing projects like the Cancer AI & Technology Challenge (CATCH). On the policy front, India’s M.A.N.A.V. framework promotes trust and accountability, advocating for global cooperation on AI safety. Bhatia and Deb stressed the need for rapid, scalable execution in partnership with beneficiaries, reinforcing India’s commitment to shaping a more equitable and inclusive future for AI through robust India AI governance.
