The Indian Army has officially approved the procurement of the Indigenous MPATGM (Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile), marking a significant stride towards bolstering domestic military manufacturing and reducing reliance on foreign imports. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), this state-of-the-art weapon system is set to replace older imported systems like MILAN and Konkurs, providing soldiers with equipment tailored for India’s diverse battlefield conditions.

This third-generation “fire-and-forget” missile offers infantry troops a potent tool across various combat zones. While initially noted for a 2-kilometer range, recent testing confirms its accuracy from 200 meters up to 4,000 meters. This flexibility makes the Indigenous MPATGM ideal for close-quarters engagements, crucial for neutralizing modern tanks effectively. Its inclusion will significantly enhance frontline defenses against heavily armored vehicles during border conflicts and high-intensity standoffs. Despite minor initial concerns about its weight, the army concluded that the missile’s exceptional performance, devastating tandem High-Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) warhead, and domestic origins outweigh this factor.

Mass production by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) will ensure a secure supply chain, directly benefiting the local defense industry and aligning perfectly with the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative. The Indigenous MPATGM features a sophisticated miniaturized Imaging Infrared (IIR) seeker, ensuring target identification in all conditions, and a critical top-attack mode to bypass thick frontal armor, guaranteeing troop survivability and battlefield dominance.
