Eighth-Gen Hyundai Elantra Unveiled: Radical Design, Advanced Tech, and Hybrid Upgrade

Eighth-gen Hyundai Elantra

Tech Desk: Hyundai has pulled the wraps off the eighth-generation Elantra, revealing a completely radical redesign that departs significantly from its predecessor. Dubbed the Avante in its home Korean market, this new sedan made its debut at the 2026 Busan International Mobility Show, showcasing larger proportions, an entirely revamped exterior and interior, and a substantial upgrade to its hybrid powertrain. This isn’t just a facelift; it’s a bold new statement from Hyundai.

The new Elantra adopts Hyundai’s “Art of Steel” design language, characterized by sharp cuts and aggressive creases, making it 55mm longer and 30mm wider than before. Inside, the transformation is equally dramatic, centered around the new Pleos Connect interface featuring a massive 14.6-inch touchscreen and a slim digital driver’s display. Crucially, Hyundai has retained physical controls for essential functions, a welcome move for many drivers.

Beyond aesthetics, the eighth-gen Elantra is packed with advanced features. Occupants will benefit from a Bang & Olufsen sound system, dual wireless charging, and 100W USB ports. Safety is paramount, with 10 airbags and a comprehensive ADAS suite. Hyundai also introduces innovative safety features like navigation-based Smart Cruise Control 2 and Pedal Misuse Safety Assist, designed to prevent common driving errors.

Under the hood, while the 2.0-litre petrol engine carries over, the 1.6-litre hybrid powertrain receives a significant boost, now delivering 157hp – a 16hp increase. This hybrid system also boasts smart regenerative braking and a ‘Hybrid Hierarchical Predictive Control System’ for enhanced fuel efficiency, alongside a ‘Stay Mode’ allowing in-car functions to operate with the engine off. This new Elantra promises a blend of style, technology, and efficiency.
