Tech Desk: In a significant stride for regional defence cooperation, Indian Air Force (IAF) Rafale fighter jets and C-17 transport aircraft have arrived in Australia to participate in the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) premier multinational air combat exercise, Pitch Black 2026. This deployment marks a crucial step in expanding military partnerships between India and Australia, alongside 18 other participating nations.

Over 120 Indian Air Warriors, along with four Rafales and two C-17s, will engage in complex air combat scenarios from July 20 to August 7. The exercise, hosted across RAAF Bases Darwin, Tindal, and Amberley, aims to enhance interoperability, sharpen combat flying skills, and strengthen strategic relationships with friendly nations across the Indo-Pacific and Europe.

Pitch Black 2026 is RAAF’s flagship international air combat exercise, featuring up to 100 jet aircraft and more than 2,500 personnel. This year’s edition is notable for the debut of Japan’s F-35 Lightning II fighters and Indonesia’s T-50I Golden Eagle jets. The IAF’s participation underscores India’s commitment to multilateral defence ties and collective security in a dynamic geopolitical landscape, reinforcing its role as a key regional partner.
