The Comeback Kid: Why Removable Smartphone Batteries Are Poised for a Return

Tech Desk: For years, the idea of easily swapping out a dead phone battery felt like a relic of the past, sacrificed for sleek designs and water resistance. Yet, the era of sealed-in power packs might be drawing to a close. Thanks to a new European Union regulation set to take effect in February 2027, the long-lamented removable smartphone batteries are on the cusp of a significant comeback, potentially changing how we interact with our devices globally.

The shift away from user-replaceable batteries was driven by consumer demand for thinner phones, premium materials like glass, and robust water/dust resistance ratings. Manufacturers also benefited from quicker upgrade cycles. However, this convenience came at an environmental cost, contributing to e-waste and shortening device lifespans. The EU’s mandate aims to reverse this trend, promoting sustainability by requiring devices to feature easily replaceable batteries, either by end-users with common tools or by professional repairers under specific conditions.

While we might not return to the “pop off the back” simplicity of old, the regulation allows for batteries secured by screws, provided the necessary tools are supplied. This pragmatic approach means future phones could offer a balance between durability and repairability. Major brands like Apple, whose newer iPhones already boast impressive battery longevity and IP ratings, might find carve-outs. Nevertheless, the impending change signals a significant win for consumers and the planet, promising a future where our smartphones last longer and are less disposable.
