Tech Desk: Suzuki Motor Corp has announced a significant leap in its hybrid vehicle strategy, confirming plans to develop “Suzuki REEV Light”—a plug-in range extender system specifically for compact cars. This innovative approach evolves their in-house series hybrid program by adding external charging capability, promising a blend of efficiency and convenience for drivers.

The “Suzuki REEV Light” system uses an electric motor to drive the wheels, with a compact engine acting as a generator. Crucially, it integrates a charging connection and a right-sized battery, allowing drivers to plug in for shorter trips while retaining the engine’s ability to generate power for extended journeys. Suzuki emphasizes this design avoids oversized batteries, reducing weight and material costs, yet frees drivers from range anxiety.

This development builds upon Suzuki’s existing series hybrid concept, which generates electricity from fuel without external charging. The “Suzuki REEV Light” offers that additional flexibility. Suzuki estimates its compact-car series hybrid could slash CO₂ emissions by roughly 29%, a substantial reduction. While specific models like the Fronx and Baleno, potentially utilizing the 1.2-litre Z12E engine, were previously reported, Suzuki is yet to confirm their inclusion in the “Suzuki REEV Light” rollout.

For Maruti Suzuki in India, this technology broadens their options beyond petrol and CNG, pushing into more advanced hybrid and electric models. The integration of “Suzuki REEV Light” could be a pivotal step in offering cost-effective, emissions-friendly mobility solutions, bridging the gap between traditional hybrids and full EVs for the mass market.
