Tech Desk: India is set to make a significant global statement about its burgeoning military-industrial strength. During the second phase of the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) massive multinational combat exercise, “Tarang Shakti,” New Delhi plans to proudly display its robust India indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities to top air force officials from approximately 40 nations. This ambitious move, scheduled from September 26 to October 12, 2026, at Jodhpur Air Force Station, underscores India’s shift from being a major importer to an emerging defence exporter.

As part of this calculated push to boost military exports, visiting foreign delegates will embark on an exclusive tour of India’s premier defence production facilities. This includes visits to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in Bengaluru, followed by an inspection of the Tata-Airbus C-295 military transport aircraft production line in Vadodara, highlighting the nation’s advancements in complex aerospace manufacturing.

Tarang Shakti itself is shaping up as a historic gathering, featuring fighter jets from eight nations, including the first-ever tactical drills involving US fifth-generation F-35 stealth fighters alongside French Rafales and India’s indigenous Tejas. IAF Vice Chief Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit emphasized India’s focus on developing high-tech solutions for global partners, aligning self-reliance (Atmanirbharta) with international cooperation.

The Indian government has made military exports a core priority, targeting ₹50,000 crore by FY2029-30, building on a record ₹38,424 crore in FY2025-26. Reforms like simplified licensing and expanded Open General Export Licence (OGEL) frameworks are facilitating this growth. Recent milestones, such as Indonesia’s purchase of BrahMos cruise missiles and the indigenous Astra beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile, firmly establish India’s transformation into a reliable defence supplier.
