India Unveils Next-Gen Lightweight Bulletproof Glass for Armoured Military Vehicles

Tech Desk: India has achieved a significant stride towards military self-reliance with a ₹50-crore partnership between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). This ambitious four-year initiative aims to engineer cutting-edge lightweight bulletproof glass specifically for the nation’s armoured vehicles, promising a revolution in defence material science.

The core innovation lies in high-strength, transparent nanocrystalline glass-ceramics, developed by CSIR-CGCRI. By uniformly dispersing nanometre-sized crystals within a specially engineered glass matrix, scientists have created a material that delivers exceptional physical toughness and ballistic strength while maintaining crystal-clear optical visibility. This technology directly addresses India’s strategic defence needs, aiming to replace heavy, imported transparent armour.

A major advantage of this indigenous solution is its drastically reduced weight. The new glass-ceramics are projected to slash the weight and thickness of existing transparent armour by 30 to 50 percent. Despite being significantly thinner, it offers robust multi-shot ballistic protection, capable of stopping AK-47 fire from 100 metres, meeting rigorous BIS Level V and VI standards.

Early trials at DRDO-TBRL have shown highly promising results, with the armour successfully halting bullets fired from 10 metres at high velocity from an indigenous Trichy Assault Rifle. This success paves the way for advanced multi-shot trials, crucial for real-world combat conditions.

Beyond ground vehicles, this weight-saving technology holds immense potential for naval warships, military aircraft, and critical civilian security infrastructure. With domestic manufacturing interest high, this project will bolster India’s defence ecosystem, reducing foreign import dependence and propelling indigenous innovation forward.
