OpenAI Launches ChatGPT for Teens with Enhanced Parental Controls and Study Mode

ChatGPT for Teens

Tech Desk: OpenAI has officially rolled out ‘ChatGPT for Teens,’ an age-specific version of its popular AI chatbot designed for users under 18, featuring robust safeguards and learning tools. This new iteration prioritizes safety with built-in parental controls and a unique Study Mode, aiming to support education while mitigating risks inherent to AI interaction.

Activating ChatGPT for Teens is seamless; the system automatically detects users under 18 through account age, verified age, or an internal age-prediction mechanism. While retaining full chatbot capabilities, this version introduces crucial add-ons like Study Mode, which guides students through problems with step-by-step explanations and quizzes, alongside Homework Reminders to reinforce learning.

Safety is paramount, with additional safeguards around sensitive areas such as violence, self-harm, eating disorders, and explicit content. Parental controls allow guardians to link accounts, set ‘Quiet Hours’ to limit usage, and receive safety notifications in high-risk scenarios, though privacy ensures parents cannot monitor conversations. Frequent reminders prompt teens to take breaks during extended use.

This dedicated version of ChatGPT for Teens began its global rollout on August 18 for both free and paid plans, with full availability expected in Australia by September 8 and continued expansion in the coming weeks. OpenAI’s move signifies a significant step towards responsible AI deployment for younger audiences.
