Tech Desk: Chinese automakers are making massive investments in humanoid robots, signaling a bold bet on them becoming the next major profit driver—a strategy closely mirroring Tesla’s ambitious vision. Leading this charge is Xpeng, whose robotics unit recently secured a record $900 million in funding, valuing it at an impressive $6.3 billion.

The widespread hype surrounding humanoid robots, fueled by Tesla’s Optimus and Boston Dynamics’ Atlas, is increasingly backed by concrete progress. Advances in physical capabilities, coupled with AI breakthroughs like large language models, are empowering robots to learn complex tasks. This technological momentum is rapidly attracting new entrants into the field.

Beyond Xpeng, which received significant personal investment from its founders, other major Chinese players like Chery, BYD, Changan, GAC, Li Auto, SAIC, and Seres are actively developing their own humanoid robots. Michael Dunne of Dunne Insights notes Xpeng’s particular focus on autonomy and quick adjustments, seeing razor-thin car profits leading to a more promising robot future.

While Chinese manufacturers possess a formidable hardware advantage, the critical challenge remains their ability to match Tesla’s advanced AI capabilities. The global race for widespread commercial deployment is intensifying, with companies like Hyundai’s Boston Dynamics also pushing for factory integration by 2028. The future of robotics, it appears, is being shaped by this high-stakes automotive competition.
