The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a probe covering approximately 1,000 of these autonomous vehicles, scrutinizing Tesla’s self-certification process for safety compliance. This immediate regulatory review comes just days after Tesla initiated commercial Cybercab service, with ambitious plans for expanding operations to additional locations.

The core of NHTSA’s concern centers on the Cybercab’s unconventional design, which entirely lacks traditional manual controls such as a brake pedal, gas pedal, and steering wheel. The agency’s audit query seeks to meticulously examine the technical data and procedures Tesla relied upon to certify the vehicle, particularly how it determined applicability to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) given its unique configuration.

This swift federal action highlights the immense scrutiny surrounding the deployment of fully autonomous vehicles on public roads. Tesla had indicated compliance after self-certifying, but regulators are now questioning the thoroughness and validity of that process.
