Tech Desk: In a significant leap for India’s defense sector, DRDO has unveiled a revolutionary new lightweight armour technology offering STANAG Level 6 protection against formidable 30mm armour-piercing threats. This breakthrough is set to transform indigenous manufacturing capabilities, allowing Indian combat platforms to achieve world-class security without the traditional weight penalties.

Developed by Pune’s Research & Development Establishment (Engineers), these advanced composite panels have successfully defeated 30mm Armour-Piercing Fin-Stabilised Discarding Sabot (APFSDS) rounds and 10 kg TNT mine blasts. Traditionally, STANAG 4569 Level 6, the highest protection tier, demands heavy steel, significantly compromising vehicle mobility and fuel efficiency. DRDO’s innovation maintains structural integrity while drastically reducing weight.

This DRDO 30mm AP-Resistant STANAG Level 6 Lightweight Armour Tech is crucial for agile platforms like the upcoming Zorawar Light Tank and Future Infantry Combat Vehicles (FICVs). It also enables modern Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) to integrate heavy active protection systems and advanced electronics without becoming unwieldy, ensuring Indian combat vehicles remain highly maneuverable and survivable on the battlefield.

To foster self-reliance, DRDO is actively offering this proprietary technology to private Indian manufacturers via an Expression of Interest for Transfer of Technology. This strategic move aims to establish robust local supply chains, eliminate reliance on expensive imports, and accelerate India’s journey towards complete defense indigenization.
