India’s Aerospace Self-Reliance Soars: HAL Light Utility Helicopter Deliveries Begin 2027-28

HAL Light Utility Helicopter

Tech Desk: India’s push for aerospace self-reliance is taking a major leap forward as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) prepares to deliver the first batch of its indigenously developed HAL Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) to the armed forces by financial year 2027-28. This crucial initial rollout of 12 Limited Series Production (LSP) helicopters – six each for the Indian Army and Air Force – marks a significant milestone in modernizing the nation’s defense capabilities.

These new 3-tonne rotorcraft are set to replace the military’s decades-old Aérospatiale-designed Cheetah and Chetak helicopters, which have long surpassed their operational lifespans. The LUH, powered by a HAL/Turbomeca Shakti-1U turboshaft engine, boasts a maximum speed of 260 km/h and a service ceiling of 6.5 kilometres, making it ideal for high-altitude reconnaissance and logistics.

Manufactured at HAL’s Tumakuru facility, the LUH features a fully digital “glass” Smart Cockpit Display System. Currently, the helicopter is undergoing final military airworthiness assessments by CEMILAC, including critical flight tests for autorotation and the integration of an Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS). With a projected requirement for 187 units, the HAL Light Utility Helicopter will become a cornerstone for reconnaissance, troop transport, and casualty evacuation across India’s strategic borders.
