IAF Eyes NASM-SR Missile for Attack Helicopters, Boosting Offensive Capabilities

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is closely examining the potential to adapt the Indian Navy’s indigenously developed Naval Anti-Ship Missile – Short Range (NASM-SR) for attack helicopter strike missions. This strategic move aims to significantly enhance the IAF’s offensive capabilities, particularly in contested airspace where GPS signals may be jammed.

The NASM-SR, recently proven in a successful salvo-mode trial by the DRDO and Indian Navy, features an advanced Imaging Infra-Red (IIR) seeker. This passive thermal tracking system allows the missile to identify and target specific structural points on a vessel, distinguishing it from decoys and resisting electronic countermeasures like jamming and chaff, which often blind radar-guided missiles. Coupled with a two-way data link providing a live video feed, the system offers crucial mid-flight targeting adjustments or mission abort options. This precision control is vital for minimizing collateral damage in complex maritime environments and adhering to strict rules of engagement. The IAF sees this modularity and resilience as a perfect fit for its needs.

Adapting the NASM-SR for attack helicopters would provide the IAF with a potent, standoff strike capability against land-based coastal or inland targets.
