Tech Desk: The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set for a monumental upgrade in its communication capabilities, following the Ministry of Defence’s signing of a ₹2,563 crore contract with New Space India Ltd. This landmark deal will see the acquisition of GSAT-7C, a dedicated and secure IAF military satellite, designed, developed, and manufactured by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This indigenous project is poised to revolutionize the IAF’s operational effectiveness.

GSAT-7C will provide an end-to-end encrypted network for voice, data, and video communications, offering seamless connectivity between airbases, radar stations, ground facilities, and airborne platforms. This robust framework is critical for modern warfare, significantly enhancing the IAF’s network-centric operations. It will also support advanced software-defined radios (SDRs) nearing production by DRDO, ensuring future-proof integration.

This strategic acquisition is a game-changer, promising real-time sharing of operational data, improved situational awareness, and accelerated decision-making during military missions. It marks a significant leap towards bolstering India’s self-reliance in critical strategic technologies under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make-in-India’ initiatives, showcasing India’s growing prowess in indigenous defence manufacturing and space technology.
