Tech Desk: In a groundbreaking move set to redefine India’s aerospace capabilities, British giant Rolls-Royce has presented a monumental proposal: complete technology transfer and full intellectual property rights for a new high-thrust engine specifically designed for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). This unprecedented offer promises India sovereign control over its future stealth fighter propulsion, a critical step towards genuine self-reliance.

The proposal centers on co-developing a powerful 120+ kilonewton-class engine, explicitly free of third-party components or licensing restrictions. This crucial distinction shields India from potential external sanctions or supply chain vulnerabilities, a significant advantage over alternative offers like France’s SAFRAN, which may still involve such dependencies.

This timing is strategic, building on Rolls-Royce’s existing partnership with Reliance Industries to establish an aerospace manufacturing facility in India. This foundation could prove vital for the indigenous development and production of advanced propulsion systems, directly supporting the AMCA MK-2 variant’s need for a stronger, domestically controlled engine.
