Tech Desk: India is embarking on its most significant mechanised warfare overhaul since the 1980s, introducing the highly anticipated Future Infantry Combat Vehicle (FICV). This multi-billion-dollar “Make in India” initiative aims to replace the Indian Army’s aging Soviet-era BMP-2 fleet, which is increasingly vulnerable to 21st-century threats like advanced anti-tank missiles and armed drones, especially along the challenging Chinese borders and vast Pakistani deserts.

Designed as a heavily protected, highly mobile tracked platform, the FICV will transport fully equipped infantry squads directly into combat zones, operating seamlessly with main battle tanks. Key features include true amphibious capabilities via hydro-jets, a potent 600-horsepower engine for its 20-ton frame, and a crew of three supporting eight infantry soldiers. Its formidable lethality package boasts a 30mm auto-cannon, coaxial machine guns, anti-tank guided missile launchers, and native drone integration.

Crucially, the FICV prioritizes survivability with an Active Protection System to intercept incoming projectiles and STANAG Level-5 protection against heavy ballistic threats. This radical leap builds on DRDO’s pioneering “Abhay” technology demonstrator from the 1990s, which cultivated domestic expertise in armoured vehicle architecture and weapon integration, paving the way for today’s advanced platforms.

The strategic procurement, initially for 2,000-2,200 tracked vehicles, is now projected to exceed 3,500 units, encompassing both tracked variants for deserts and wheeled configurations for plains and mountainous terrains. This intense industrial race sees public and private sector giants like Armoured Vehicles Nigam, Larsen & Toubro, TATA Motors, and Mahindra Defence Systems fiercely competing, cementing India’s commitment to defence self-reliance.
