Tech Desk: India’s long-stalled ₹70,000 crore Project 75(I) submarine deal with Germany is finally nearing Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approval, signaling a crucial advancement for the Indian Navy’s modernization efforts. After years of technical requirements, commercial negotiations, and technology transfer disputes, this landmark acquisition is poised to strengthen India’s underwater warfare capabilities significantly.

The program involves building six advanced Air Independent Propulsion (AIP)-equipped submarines in India, leveraging substantial technology transfer from Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). This “Make in India” initiative is vital for bolstering deterrence against escalating Chinese naval activity in the Indian Ocean, providing the Navy with much-needed endurance and stealth. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) is set to be the primary Indian partner.

These new submarines will feature state-of-the-art sensors, torpedoes, missiles, and electronic warfare systems, enhancing surveillance and sea-denial capabilities. The deal addresses the critical strain on India’s conventional submarine fleet, which suffers from ageing vessels and induction delays. Building upon the success of Project 75 with French assistance, Project 75(I) emphasizes greater domestic expertise and indigenous design.
