Tech Desk: India has marked a monumental achievement in secure communications, with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully completing military field trials of an indigenous fibre-based Quantum Key Distribution System. This groundbreaking development, in collaboration with Taqbit Labs and academic partners like IIT-Delhi, positions India at the forefront of quantum technology nations.

The system underwent rigorous testing across a 100 km optical fibre link between Prayagraj and Vindhyachal, Uttar Pradesh. Recording a Quantum Bit Error Rate of 6 percent and a secure key rate of approximately 5 kilobits per second, these trials demonstrated sufficient throughput for secure text and low-bandwidth voice encryption, while its physical layer monitoring effectively detected eavesdropping attempts.

The core advantage of this India Quantum Key Distribution System lies in its reliance on the fundamental laws of quantum mechanics, making encryption fundamentally unbreakable. Unlike traditional methods vulnerable to future quantum computers, any interception immediately alters the quantum state, alerting users. This makes India’s strategic communication networks resilient against next-generation cyber threats.

This milestone is crucial for building scalable, multi-hop quantum communication networks, indigenously designed to safeguard national infrastructure.
