Tech Desk: India is set to significantly advance its domestic defense capabilities with critical trials of the indigenous 500-kg PGB-500 guided bomb scheduled for September-October 2026. This precision-guided munition, a product of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), will undergo joint flight tests with the Indian Air Force (IAF) aboard the formidable Su-30MKI fighter jet, marking a pivotal moment for the nation’s self-reliance in advanced aerial strike weapons.

These crucial carriage and release trials are slated for Air Force Station Jodhpur and the Chandan firing range in Rajasthan. The PGB-500, a heavy-duty weapon, is specifically designed to neutralize hardened targets like reinforced bunkers, command centers, and vital enemy infrastructure. Its substantial 500-kg payload offers the IAF a potent, locally-made option for air-to-ground attacks, ensuring operational effectiveness without unduly compromising the host aircraft’s range or performance. This project underscores India’s commitment to developing sophisticated, home-grown solutions.

The Su-30MKI, known for its robust payload capacity and extended-range capabilities, is the ideal platform for such high-stakes testing, having previously proven its mettle with other heavy munitions like the 1,000-kg Gaurav glide bomb. Unlike the TARA system, which converts existing unguided bombs into smart weapons, the PGB-500 is a purpose-built smart bomb engineered from the ground up by the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE).

Successful trials will not only significantly enhance the IAF’s ability to precisely strike distant targets in contested environments but also underscore India’s strategic push towards a strong domestic arms industry. This local production capability is vital for providing the Air Force with more combat choices while drastically cutting down on costly imports from other countries, reinforcing national security and technological sovereignty.
