India and UK Edge Closer to Landmark MARTLET Missile Pact for Army

MARTLET Missile Pact

Tech Desk: India is on the verge of signing a pivotal inter-governmental agreement with the United Kingdom for the procurement of hundreds of advanced Lightweight Multirole Missiles, known as Martlet, for the Indian Army. This landmark MARTLET Missile Pact, expected to be finalized soon, significantly expands an initial emergency order, reinforcing India’s access to modern precision weaponry and deepening defence ties with Britain.

Manufactured by Thales in Northern Ireland, the Martlet missile is a compact, 13-kilogram precision-guided weapon. Its laser beam-riding guidance system ensures exceptional accuracy while minimizing vulnerability to electronic countermeasures. The missile’s versatility allows deployment from multiple platforms, including helicopters, ground vehicles, naval vessels, and even man-portable launchers, making it a strategic asset for diverse operational roles.

This procurement is part of a wider strategic initiative by New Delhi to enhance its defence capabilities and foster industrial collaboration. British officials suggest the MARTLET Missile Pact could pave the way for more profound defence cooperation, including co-design and co-development of future complex weapon systems, aligning with India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision. Such discussions are already underway, alongside talks on maritime electric propulsion for Indian Navy warships. The deal underscores a growing trend in bilateral partnerships focused on technology transfer, joint manufacturing, and shared defence innovation.
