Indian Army to Acquire 300 More K9 Vajra Guns in Decades’ Largest Artillery Deal

K9 Vajra Guns

Tech Desk: The Indian Army is gearing up for its largest artillery procurement in decades, with a monumental ₹23,000-crore plan to acquire over 300 additional K9 Vajra-T self-propelled howitzers. This historic deal is set to significantly bolster India’s long-range firepower, positioning the nation more robustly across critical desert and high-altitude theatres.

If approved, this acquisition will propel Larsen & Toubro’s production mandate for K9 Vajra Guns beyond 500 units, cementing its role as a cornerstone of India’s indigenous defence manufacturing under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. These formidable 155mm/52-calibre tracked howitzers are capable of engaging targets beyond 40 kilometres, offering a crucial advantage in modern warfare scenarios.

The massive expansion is driven by the army’s strategic need to strengthen firepower on two simultaneous fronts: against Pakistan in the Thar Desert and along the Line of Actual Control with China. K9 Vajra Guns provide superior mobility, enhanced crew protection, and the vital ability to ‘shoot and scoot’ rapidly, attributes critical for survival and effectiveness in dynamic combat zones. Successful trials of a cold-weather adapted Vajra variant in Ladakh have confirmed their robust performance in extreme conditions.

Following the 2020 clashes in Eastern Ladakh, several Vajra units were swiftly redeployed from desert sectors to the northern theatre, underscoring their operational flexibility. This procurement aligns perfectly with the Indian Army’s broader artillery modernisation drive, aiming to standardise 155mm calibre guns across regiments by 2042. This deal represents not just a quantitative leap, but a qualitative one, fostering technology transfer, localisation, and operational adaptability for India’s defence industrial base.
