Tech Desk: The Indian Navy has significantly bolstered its maritime capabilities with the recent delivery of another MH-60R Seahawk helicopter in Kochi, marking a pivotal moment in its ongoing modernization drive and strengthening the India-US defence partnership. This advanced multi-mission helicopter, with two more en route, promises to enhance India’s prowess in the strategically vital Indian Ocean Region, improving surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, and over-the-horizon targeting.

Developed by Lockheed Martin, the MH-60R Seahawk is a versatile asset, engineered for a wide spectrum of missions including anti-surface operations, search-and-rescue, and critical ship-based tasks. Equipped with long-range sensors and compatible weapons, it empowers the Navy to detect submarines, secure sea lanes, and protect carrier groups against evolving maritime threats. Its operational effectiveness was already proven during Operation Sindoor, lauded by former Navy chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi.

India’s acquisition of these helicopters falls under a 2020 Foreign Military Sales agreement, which will see a total of 24 units integrated into the fleet. The commissioning of the first squadron, INAS 334, at INS Garuda in Kochi underscored a new era for India’s naval aviation. This ongoing induction provides a robust platform for advanced training, maintenance, and potential future technology transfer partnerships.

The arrival of these state-of-the-art platforms is crucial for India amidst increasing strategic challenges in the Indo-Pacific. It not only reinforces the Indian Navy’s operational readiness but also highlights the deepening defence cooperation with the United States, fostering interoperability and shared security interests in maintaining regional stability.
