Tech Desk: Israel is actively exploring the development of its own stealth fighter, marking a significant strategic shift after decades of reliance on American aircraft. This ambitious ten-year plan, aiming for a flight demonstrator by 2036, aligns remarkably with India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program, presenting a compelling opportunity for an Indo-Israeli stealth fighter partnership.

While Israel possesses advanced expertise in Active Electronically Scanned Array radars, electronic warfare, and avionics, it lacks the infrastructure for mass-producing stealth airframes or high-thrust turbofan engines. This is where India’s strengths shine: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited offers vast manufacturing capacity, and the Indian Air Force provides significant demand. Their existing defence ties, highlighted by successful co-development projects like the Barak-8 missile system, foster strong mutual trust and facilitate technology transfer.

However, a full structural partnership faces hurdles. India prioritizes domestic ownership of the AMCA’s airframe and intellectual property to avoid export restrictions, a lesson learned from past dependencies. Moreover, much of Israel’s cutting-edge electronics are tied to American IP, granting Washington potential veto power over exports. Development timelines also diverge, with India aiming for AMCA prototypes by 2029, while Israel’s demonstrator is a decade away.

Therefore, the most pragmatic path forward lies in focused, subsystem-level collaboration. India could invite Israeli firms to supply critical electronic warfare suites, radar components, and sensor fusion software. This approach leverages Israel’s technological prowess without disrupting AMCA’s core design, engine partnerships, or India’s strategic independence. Such a targeted Indo-Israeli stealth fighter partnership would also mitigate geopolitical complexities, allowing both nations to advance their airpower capabilities effectively.
