Russia’s Desperate Su-57E ToT India Offer: A Lifeline Amidst Sanctions and Production Woes

Su-57E ToT India

Tech Desk: Russia is making an unprecedented push to sell its fifth-generation Su-57E stealth fighter to India, offering sweeping concessions including full technology transfer (ToT) and local manufacturing of up to 100 aircraft. This remarkably generous proposal, however, reveals Moscow’s urgent need to shore up its struggling aerospace sector, which is grappling with production deficits and the crippling impact of international sanctions.

Despite a 2019 contract for 76 Su-57s for its own forces by 2027-28, Russia’s production rates lag significantly behind global rivals like the F-35 and J-20. The ongoing war further strains manufacturing lines, prioritizing older aircraft. A substantial Su-57E ToT India deal would inject crucial capital, ensuring the long-term viability of the fighter’s production line and offsetting hefty development costs.

The strategic proposal includes sharing highly sensitive source code for mission systems, along with scaled-down options for assembly or joint production. Yet, the Su-57 has found only one confirmed foreign customer in Algeria, with global buyers deterred by stealth concerns, unreliable timelines, and the threat of US sanctions.

India, meanwhile, remains largely unswayed. New Delhi’s aerospace strategy prioritizes indigenous self-reliance, focusing on upgrading its Su-30MKI fleet, acquiring more Rafales, and accelerating its Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project. Diverting funds to the Su-57E ToT India proposal would undermine these domestic ambitions, making the deal highly unlikely to proceed despite Russia’s pressing circumstances.
