India’s ‘Sudarshan Chakra’ Vision: 15 Advanced Long-Range Air Defence Squadrons to Secure Skies

Sudarshan Chakra air defence

Tech Desk: India is significantly bolstering its aerial defenses with the ambitious “Sudarshan Chakra” concept, a multi-layered, integrated air defence network designed to provide comprehensive national coverage. This strategic overhaul moves away from relying on isolated missile systems towards a unified shield.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to double its formidable S-400 Triumf inventory, with plans to field ten squadrons following the procurement of five additional regiments. This Russian-made system has proven its worth, prompting the Defence Acquisition Council’s approval for expansion.

Simultaneously, India is investing heavily in indigenous technology. Project Kusha, the DRDO’s indigenously developed extended-range surface-to-air missile (ER-SAM) system, will soon see five squadrons join the IAF between 2028 and 2030. These missiles boast engagement ranges of 150 km to 400 km, aiming to rival global counterparts.

Together, these acquisitions will equip India with 15 advanced long-range air defence (LRAD) squadrons, creating a robust medium-term arsenal. However, strategists emphasize that sheer numbers aren’t enough. The “Sudarshan Chakra” vision focuses on creating overlapping radar and missile zones to counter environmental limitations and electronic warfare, ensuring no gaps in protection, especially along challenging borders.
