Over half (53%) of Indian smartphone users admitted replacing their devices earlier than planned due to broken cover glass, highlighting a significant shift in consumer behavior.

The survey, conducted in late 2025, found that a staggering 87% of respondents had dropped their smartphones in the past year, with many expressing anxiety over durability concerns. This widespread accidental damage isn’t just cosmetic; one in five required professional repair, often costing over Rs 2,000. Even premium phone owners are affected, with 61% citing broken glass as a reason for early replacement, compared to 42% of budget users.

A remarkable 61% of consumers are influenced by durability claims, and 74% are willing to pay more for enhanced cover-material features like improved drop and scratch resistance. Consumers now prioritize robust protection for both front and back, alongside battery life and display clarity.

The findings challenge the traditional upgrade cycle driven by technological advancements. Instead, the everyday mishap of a dropped phone has become a primary catalyst for new purchases. Manufacturers and retailers must recognize this evolving consumer demand, as a tough phone is increasingly valued over just a smart one.
