Boost Your Wi-Fi: The Critical Router Placement Mistake Sabotaging Your Speed

WiFi router placement

Tech Desk: Is your home Wi-Fi slower than it should be? The culprit might not be your internet plan, but a common mistake: poor WiFi router placement. Many households unwittingly position their router next to the TV, a setup that can severely degrade signal quality and speed.

The issue stems from several factors. Modern TVs contain numerous metal components that absorb and reflect the electromagnetic waves carrying Wi-Fi signals, leading to weaker coverage and frequent connection drops. Furthermore, most smart TVs, streaming devices, and your Wi-Fi router often operate on the crowded 2.4GHz frequency band. Clustering these devices together creates radio interference and congestion, resulting in frustratingly slow speeds and unstable connections.

This interference is amplified if other wireless gadgets like gaming consoles, soundbars, or set-top boxes are also nearby. While 5GHz or 6GHz bands are less susceptible, the 2.4GHz band remains widely used. To ensure optimal performance, relocate your router to a central, open location, ideally on a raised shelf or table. Keep it away from large metal objects and other electronics like microwaves and televisions for a significantly faster and more reliable Wi-Fi experience.
