Indian Student’s Bribes.fyi Platform Empowers Citizens to Report Bribery Online

Tech Desk: A significant leap in India’s fight against corruption has emerged with the launch of Bribes.fyi, a groundbreaking website enabling citizens to anonymously report bribery online. Created by Aryan Nishad, a visionary BTech student, this crowdsourced platform empowers individuals to detail incidents of bribery in government offices, offering unprecedented transparency. Since its July 2 launch, Bribes.fyi has quickly amassed 616 reports from 251 cities, painting a stark, real-time picture of everyday corruption that affects millions.

The platform streamlines the reporting process, requiring users to share basic details such as the government department involved, the amount allegedly demanded, and the incident’s location. A crucial feature allows users to specify if they paid or refused the bribe, revealing that an encouraging 38% reportedly declined the illicit payment. All submissions are handled with strict anonymity, ensuring identifying information is removed to foster a safe space for whistleblowers. This collected data is then systematically grouped by department, city, and state, building a dynamic and publicly accessible database.

Initial findings from Bribes.fyi offer compelling insights, with police departments topping the list with 337 reports, followed by the RTO and Revenue/Land Records. While the website prudently emphasizes that its data reflects user experiences and identifies patterns rather than providing official corruption rates, it offers invaluable insights into the pervasive nature of petty corruption. The initiative has garnered strong public support, though discussions around report verification have prompted the platform to highlight its internal pattern-identification system.

Bribes.fyi stands as a powerful, citizen-led tool, profoundly empowering ordinary Indians to take a stand against illicit practices by providing a central hub to report bribery online. It not only highlights prevalent issues but also actively encourages a culture of accountability, potentially influencing future anti-corruption efforts and driving meaningful change across the nation.
