According to a new research note from Omdia, the tech giant has canceled its plans for a foldable MacBook-iPad hybrid, dashing hopes for a groundbreaking new form factor that had been anticipated as early as 2026. This move comes just as Apple prepares to unveil its first foldable iPhone, the “iPhone Ultra.”

Earlier reports, notably from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, described Apple’s development of a roughly 20-inch foldable iPad, which was considered a high-priority initiative. However, Gurman himself had cautioned that the experimental device might never see a commercial launch. The now-scrapped project was expected to feature a foldable display between 16.1 and 18 inches, pushing the boundaries of portable computing.

The timeline for this much-speculated device had already shifted multiple times, initially targeting 2026 before being pushed back to around 2029 for an 18-inch model. The reported cancellation, emerging shortly after John Ternus became Apple’s CEO, signals a potential strategic pivot. It appears Apple’s immediate foldable strategy is narrowing significantly, focusing primarily on the iPhone. This means a larger, MacBook or iPad-sized foldable device may not follow the iPhone’s debut anytime soon, potentially reshaping the future of Apple’s device lineup.
